SILICONE KEYBOARD COVER MACBOOK PRO RAIN UPDATE
Update 7/19/18: MacRumors has leaked an internal document from Apple Authorized Service Providers confirming that the purpose of the membrane is to “prevent debris from entering the butterfly mechanism. Here’s our video summary of the story so far. Tune in next week as we put this membrane through its dust-proofing paces, tear down the rest of the device, and speculate whether this really is a feature-or a secret bug fix impacting millions of consumers. The quiet angle is, quite literally, a cover up. I’m just here to posit: the advertised boost in quietude is a side-effect of this rubbery membrane. But you’ve heard that clever analysis from John Gruber already.

After all, Apple told The Verge that “this new third-generation keyboard wasn’t designed to solve those issues.”Īpple is in the middle of several class-action lawsuits for the failure of their keyboards, so of course they can’t just come out and say, “Hey, we fixed it!” That says there was a problem to begin with. Here’s the really good part: I can tell you it’s there, but I can’t definitively prove it’s a reliability fix. In fact, Apple has a patent for this exact tech designed to “prevent and/or alleviate contaminant ingress.” This flexible enclosure is quite obviously an ingress-proofing measure to cover up the mechanism from the daily onslaught of microscopic dust. The 2018 MacBook Pro features a thin rubberized layer under its keycaps, covering the second-generation butterfly mechanism. We’re in the middle of tearing down the newest MacBook Pro, but we’re too excited to hold this particular bit of news back:Īpple has cocooned their butterfly switches in a thin, silicone barrier.

It's the clear plastic one that's going for $20/so on Amazon.BREAKING (July 13, 2018): Here’s an inflammatory take for you: Apple’s new quieter keyboard is actually a silent scheme to fix their keyboard reliability issues. If you want something that will protect your keyboard from coffee spills and bread crumbs, I'd go for that moshi keyboard or whatever it's called. Anyways, If you want something that's worth $2 but will give you a good cover from small tiny crumbs and dust fluffs and little pieces of tissue paper getting stuck between the cracks like I do, this is it. No, the print doesnt match up perfectly with the keys underneath them, but I'm fine with it because it looks fine. this was floppier than other keyboards I've used, but it still passes for its price. It was in good condition and was not wrinkled. Packaging was a simple yellow envelope, and the keyboard was folded into 3 parts inside the envelope and sealed inside a little ziplock bag. All around, good purchase and I would recommend it to anyone who's watching their budget but would still like to keep their computer protected.įast shipping - got this in 2 days. In comparison to the IVEA Cover Skin, I'm very impressed with this most recent purchase.

Before purchasing this I tried the IVEA Keyboard Silicone Cover Skin for Macbook Pro and was incredibly disappointed.that one didn't fit the keyboard at all, the black keys were spotty and not entirely opaque, and the product came in an envelope with little protection. The backlight does show through the cover, although the symbols and letters on the cover don't quite match up with the ones on the actual keys. The cover was relatively easy to put on, although it took me a little effort to make sure that it fit all of the individual keys, and it also stays on as long as you don't brush your fingers over the very edge, otherwise it comes up/off a bit.

The cover fits pretty well, although the "keys" on the cover are a little large than the actual keys, although I figure that's so that you can actually get the cover on. The different feel takes a minute to get used to when typing, but now I think I actually prefer the feel of the cover to the bare keys. I have a MacBook Pro 13'' purchased in September of 2011, and it keeps my keyboard clean without impeding my ability to type. It arrived well-protected and in perfect condition. Considering that the product is under $3, it's a great purchase.
